If you’ve always been interested in Origami - or even if you think you have two left thumbs and could never do it yourself....

"How Would You Like To See The Ancient Art
Of Japanese Origami Demystified?"

Date:

Dear Craft Enthusiast,

What do you think of, when you hear the word “Origami”?

I guess there aren’t too many people who don’t know...Origami is the art of Japanese paper folding.

And it’s easier and more accessible than you might imagine.

If you’re like me, you tried it years ago.

Your clumsy effort ended up nothing like the complex Origami animal you were trying to make.

But still, there’s a little part of you that wished you could master this strangely fascinating art form. (And you secretly envy people who make it look effortless.)

You decided in the end it wasn’t for you – and promptly forgot.

Origami Is Not Just For Kids
- Or The Mathematically Gifted

Yup. Contrary to what you might actually be thinking, the world is not made up of:

blue arrow People who can do origami

blue arrow People who can’t

The truth is, if you get the right instruction, anyone can make beautiful folded paper designs!

(And you can put your unique, original Origami creations to far more valuable use than you might think!)

The Benefits Of Origami

Don’t believe me? Well, did you know Origami has recognized therapeutic uses?

According to a variety of therapists, researchers and teachers, Origami is able to:

blue arrow Boost psychometer skills in TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) patients

blue arrow Strengthen spatial-logical-mathematical skills in children

blue arrow  Increase physical dexterity in those dealing with arthritic conditions or small muscle hand injury

blue arrow Aid in developing visualization skills, and awareness of “alternative thinking”

blue arrow Calm ADHD children and adults, and those with other cognitive conditions such as high-functioning autism, clinical anxiety and depression

In fact, Origami is growing increasingly popular in group therapy settings for patients of clinical depression, (along with knitting and crochet - all soothing “left brain” activities that shut off the hyper-stimulation of the more emotional right side.)

In fact, psychologists often recommend left-brain-engaging craft activities like painting, quilting and Origami as therapy for stress. (And it’s even been used as a calming tool in prisons!)

But you don’t need a therapist to tell you what any 6th grader knows…

“Origami Is Fun!

But not if you really do know you have two left thumbs and no spatial-logical sense - right?

Hey, don’t be so sure!

(Don’t worry - we’ll suss out the 3 dirty little secrets behind why you might feel that way in a minute.)

Some Of The Things You Can Make With Origami…

It doesn’t matter whether you think of it as “Tatagami”, “Origami” or just “exploratory paper folding”, it can be fun, unique and original.

You can use the results for highly unique, original, admired - and eye-catching:

blue arrow  Business Card Origami - and other promotional favors

blue arrow Wedding favor candy holders

blue arrow  Event or dinner placeholders

blue arrow Party game prizes

blue arrow  Décor objects or design elements

And simultaneously, you can enjoy sheer fun, stress relief or just plain entertainment

(But I do have to warn you - once you get the hang of it, paper folding can be highly addictive!)

“You’ll Never Be Bored Again!”

The fact is, you can make Origami anywhere… with almost every type of paper.

(A favorite impromptu habit of mine is using old cash receipts from my pocket or napkins from glove boxes, while waiting in someone else’s car for what often turns out to be far too long!)

“Why Are People So Fascinated With Origami
- And Where Did It Come From?”

Don’t worry - we won’t get too much into that. (It’s information you can pick up anywhere.) But very briefly…

…The oldest record of paper making comes from China, during the Han dynasty. It was invented in 104 A.D., when Ts’ai Lun, a servant of the Emperor, discovered that soaked mulberry tree bark fibers mixed with bamboo could be processed into a fine, delicate writing surface - after he’d drained the resulting pulp through coarse linen.

Nobody knows why Ts’ai Lun did this - and we can only speculate that he himself invented paper folding shortly afterwards, to give to the Emperor as a “good luck” charm.

(Culturally, “Luck” is taken very seriously in the Orient - and has been for centuries! Whereas we in the west treat “luck” in general more lightly, connecting it not with religion but with entertainment.)

By the time papermaking migrated to Japan a few hundred years later (where it really took off!) it was widely and seriously used in this capacity, the little good luck tokens being called Nori.

Historical Uses Of Origami

Some recognized historical uses:

blue arrow Religious or good luck tokens (connected with Shintoism, according to some sources)

blue arrow Official authentication of a message’s origin (the folder’s style or symbol was often recognizably unique, in ancient Japan)

blue arrow A Business token (think of it as the historical equivalent of today’ business card)

blue arrow Intrigue - it was sometimes used to convey secret messages, the meaning of the folded paper symbols known only to the parties involved - especially after Spanish and Moorish traders brought it over to Europe between 800 - 1100 AD)

And Origami isn’t as hard to make as you might still think!

The beauty of origami is:

blue arrow  You don’t need special tools to do it

blue arrow The few tools you might choose to use, you can easily make

blue arrow  You can use any sort of paper (“dollar bill” Origami is a unique Western art form and sub-hobby in itself!)

blue arrow People will admire your dexterity and creativity (Origami objects make a great party trick!)

blue arrow  Practicing Origami relieves stress and aids in promoting “alpha” wave relaxation

blue arrow It’s fun - did I mention that already?

Why Some People Have Problems
Trying To Learn Origami

It’s true that not everyone seems to be able to do Origami.

But if Traumatic Brain Injury therapists encourage it, Origami can’t be as “impossible” as you might think.

After all, almost every child in Japan starts off by learning how to make The Crane in school.

Here in the Western world, Origami is rarely even on our teachers' horizons (except for the few previously mentioned who are wise enough to use it.) So it’s understandable that we don’t seem to have such a “natural” affinity for paper folding, at first.

But almost anyone can learn the art of Origami. Yes - even if your first efforts were a total disaster!

The 3 Dirty Little Secrets
Hardly Any Origami Expert
Will Ever Admit!

After all, even the experts are only human…

Like you, they’d secretly like to be admired for their skill!

blue arrow The truth is, there are tips, techniques and tricks for making Origami easier

blue arrow Some complex designs actually are cut with scissors - or folded wet to “stretch” the paper along strategic spots

blue arrow And most likely, if you tried and grew frustrated years ago, you were shown or given a diagram not easy for a total beginner to master

Probably on purpose!

(Older siblings are particularly heartless in that respect!)

But trying to master a complex design like a curved business card “cube” first thing is rather like strapping on a pair of skis and expecting to win the Olympic ski jump.

(Not very realistic, is it?)

So you see, there is enough real skill at higher levels of the art of Origami to satisfy the most exacting of artists and purists… but you can also totally take your time working your way up to this level with easy beginner designs.

Origami truly is for everyone!

(And the easy designs still look pretty darned impressive! Especially if you use your creativity to make them your own)

So if you’re having second thoughts about whether or not you could ever produce something as dazzling as a plate of lotus flowers, or a clever business card cube, now is the perfect time to explore Origami further.
